Instagram, Facebook, groups and Twitter

Ways libraries connecting through social media.

How do Libraries connect through the use of Facebook?

While browsing through the different school library pages, I noticed that most of the post were promoting a particular event like
* April is school library month,
* Summer Book Club,
*College decision day showcasing students.
*web pages about how good school libraries affect test scores.
* Comic and Graphic novel challenge read
* school award ceremonies

The pros to the use of  Facebook postings is to make the school and community aware of the different events happening in the school library. This keeps students, parents and community aware of the activities going on at school.

The cons to the use of Facebook is that it is specifically geared to adults. Librarian are going to have a difficult time reaching young adults through this type of social plate form.

As I looked through several of the tweets and articles from these education technology leaders, I believe that they have so much to offer to educators and parents in regard to the best educational technology tools. This past few months during a our transition to virtual teaching, The use of technology created many communication challenges for some teachers, students, and parents.  It caused some chaos in the beginning of the transitional phase of virtual learning but it eventually became the norm for everyone. I think it is critical to embrace all the wonderful technology tools available for our 21st century learners. These articles and websites shared by professional educators provide so many great ideas and opportunities to improve our way of teaching and promoting the use of technology today and in the coming future. Many of the educational best practices shared through these tweets can greatly benefit everyone in the educational field.

The use of Twitter has been one of my favorite social media platforms to look for ideas for education from reputable professionals. I have been following most of the Library organizations and authors. I enjoy reading tweets from professionals especially those that are providing the most recent educational technology information.

I have been following a couple of library organizations since I became part of the Library Science Program. I like the educational resources these organizations post on their web pages. They provide great resources for librarians to share with their teachers and students. By the use of Instagram, librarian are able to reach readers, and exchange ideas with others. They are able to share books, students work, fun learning activities which helps connect with the learning community about the wonderful things  happening in schools and school libraries.  This is a great way to get everyone excited about the library resources.

  1. Thanks for your input about social media. I also noticed that a lot of the Facebook Library pages were more like announcements. The ones that were the most interactive with the users had to most followers.

  2. Hi Virginia,
    I am new to Instgram. I created an account for the library and frankly, haven't used it much since. The way you describe it makes it sound similar to Twitter. I follow library organizations on Twitter and love what I learn from them. I'll have to look for some on Instagram!

  3. People have been encouraging me to use Twitter for years, even if it is only professionally, to connect with others in the education field. I have a Twitter, but rarely use it, but after this assignment and finding some influential people to follow, I've noticed myself utilizing it a lot more. There's a lot of negative content out there, but limiting the people I follow to professionals in the field has led to new opportunities and exposure to new ideas.
